Publicist Monique Greene is a busy woman with even more ideas up her sleeve. A woman from Inglewood California, whose made a name for herself and has now been able to work for and mingle with lots of celebrities. Monique is always on the go, from booking shows to being at the Grammy’s. She plans on taking public relations to the next level alongside her friend/co-worker Karen, and interns who will assist.

How did you get started in PR? What interest you?

I went to school for radio broadcasting and interned at a radio station, it was owned by Stevie Wonder  called KJLH. They wanted me to be an on-air personality, I tried it out and it didn’t work  for me. With radio you have to interact with the audience in a whole different way, keep it consistent, it’s not as easy as people think. The publicist of the station Fred Johnson told me to work underneath him and  he showed me what publicity is all about. And from there .. it just took off.

What tools and strategies do you use to promote your clients, and are they different from what you’ve used a few years ago?

It’s kind of the same but it’s based on client’s needs. One client is never the same, my strategies and my positions for my clients are always different. I’ll have an athlete client that I’ll target a certain audience for, then I’ll have an actress or an artist, or author. Each client’s needs and how I position it and pitch it, is always going to be different.

Explain to me what you do on a day to day basis.

Some days you will have a set schedule and then something will pop up like you may have to put out fliers. For instance, during Grammy week I thought I had everything under control then at the last minute they told me “We need you to come do a walk through to show you where the clients are going to be and what type of passes they need.” But I didn’t really expect it, I had to rearrange my whole schedule, because I didn’t know how long I was going to be doing this walk through. I was shaking hands with everybody and seeing everybody and seeing where everyone must go. Stuff like that should have been done a day before but instead they had me do it at the last minute. Every day is always different. Another example is if you have a client and something breaks out ,for example, if a sex tape breaks out, you don’t have a plan and you don’t know what to expect and now you have to put that fire out. Everyday is definitely different.

What are the advantages and disadvantages living in L.A. as a publicist?

The disadvantage is that It’s crowded, you have to time yourself wisely, you can be on a freeway for like two hours. L.A. is fun the weather is good, the people are pretty much nice. L.A. has great restaurants and great food. It has its perks. It’s similar to New York City but the parking is better. All of the events are all around the corner from each other. Nothing is too far away.

I know you’ve worked with a few celebrities, the one that stood out most to me was Chris Brown. What was it like working with him, and how did that come about/ how did you meet him?

I met him through some contacts in the industry, working with Chris was actually a delight, he gets a lot of slack in the media but he’s just very very passionate sometimes. People misconstrue his passion as anger, he’s just passionate about his craft.

What are the perks of working with a celebrity or just anyone in general?

It depends on your level of excitement. Earlier it was fun mingling with different stars and getting to meet people that you see on T.V. and people you and your friends talked about growing up. To actually work with them was a delight in itself. You get free stuff, trips and tickets to award shows. A client may give you a really nice material item, whether it be a pair of shoes or a handbag. The biggest perk is just traveling and seeing different parts of the world.

What’s next for you in the PR world? Do you have any events coming up?

Me and my partner Karen have a few events coming up. We are kind of shifting our brand, were tapping into a different market. I’m going towards more film and television. Karen wants to do more sports and radio, were going to bring all those entities into one. We’re going into a few different things, we’ve had some meetings and we already do a lot of different things with different companies. So were just transitioning into a broader range for our company. We have a few interns helping that are also in Los Angeles.
