Every artist tells their story by choosing to share their pain in creative ways. Grammy award winning singer, Alicia Keys, is no different. In her book, More Myself: A Journey, she revealed the struggles, the insecurities, and the joys in the journey of becoming herself. Just recently, Keys shared an emotional letter from her book where she “divorced” her absentee father.

Although the letter was written in 1994, when Keys was only 14 years old, the pain and sadness can still be heard in her voice as she read it aloud to her fans on Instagram.

I’ve been waiting for the right moment to share this excerpt with you from #MoreMyself… ⁣ ⁣ In the early part of my teens I wrote this letter to my father, Craig. I wanted nothing to do with him. My words came from a place of vulnerability and longing. At the time it hurt so much to experience what felt like empty promises. I swore I didn’t care, but I did and it affected me deeply. I finally had enough and wrote those words.  It’s CRAZY that he kept this letter after all these years. I was so shocked when he first showed me. It was tucked away in a shoe box full of memories. I’m glad he and I can look back at it now as a sign of how far we’ve come ✨🙏🏽⁣ ⁣ If you feel moved to share, send me a deep relationship that you have had to remove from your life, or one that has been mended, or that you want to see evolve, or are working on changing. ⁣ ⁣ I think it’s so powerful that relationships have their own path. And sometimes they are meant to heal…. ⁣ ⁣ Regardless though, most of the time the healing comes from letting go. ⁣ ⁣ What are your thoughts?⁣ ⁣ Sending u my love, light and strength #moremyself #cheerstotheevolution 🥂 🥂 ⁣ ⁣ More Myself is available now.

After countless broken promises and watching her mom struggle throughout her life, Keys admitted that she had enough and wrote these words to her father, Craig. The R&B songstress has shared that they since have mended what was broken and repaired their relationship. She explained in her caption, “It’s CRAZY that he kept this letter after all these years. I was so shocked when he first showed me. It was tucked away in a shoe box full of memories. I’m glad he and I can look back at it now as a sign of how far we’ve come.”

Alicia Keys’ More Myself: A Journey, published by Oprah Winfrey’s Flatiron Books, gives the reader insight of Alicia’s career from the beginning up until the present day. She opens up about the pursuit for truth, her past, and recognizing her worth.

Earlier this year, Keys produced an audio book with the help of her husband Swizz Beatz, Oprah Winfrey, JAY-Z, Michelle Obama, and Bono.

Keys states, “This audiobook has so much amazing energy, I’ve never experienced something so intimate. It’s nuanced and surprising and musical and emotional! I love it, and I am grateful to all my friends and loved ones for joining me on this ride.”

In an Instagram post, Oprah stated, “She just carries the light with her and I have deep admiration and love for her.”

Even the former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, praised Keys, “Yet what continues to impress me is her choice to grapple with the big questions: What is my purpose? What can I do for others? How can I use this fame for good? Somewhere in there is, if not an answer, at least a glimmer of the truth that I think we’re all seeking. And by sharing her music and her soul, Alicia is bringing us closer to it than even she may realize.”

Alicia Keys upcoming seventh studio album, simply titled Alicia, is set to be released later on this year.
