Protesting in America in the year 2020 is different than every before

Protesting is something that has gone on for centuries and has made history. I’ve been protesting ever since I was about 10-years-old, but protesting as an adult in Los Angeles has been an experience I will remember forever.

When I went to my first protest in Los Angeles, I felt inspired, sad, disappointed, and empowered. All of the many emotions I felt, helped me realize the true meaning of being Black in America.

Watching a protest on television versus witnessing it in person is totally different. When I witnessed the national guard, local, and state law enforcement stand firm with their guns and the tanks in the streets, it became real that America will probably never be the same.

When protesting in 2020, I’ve seen white people, Mexicans, and Asians, people of different sexual orientations than me – something very different from the 60s protest. Many believe that George Floyd’s death is what caused major outrage, nonstop conversation, and media coverage when in fact, Black people have been feeling disrespected for years. Many Black people are tired of being wrongfully killed and the justice system failing the people who helped build America from the beginning.

Even though I’m witnessing different races and ethnicities protest, time will tell how strong their support and solidarity for Black people is.

Protesting is just one way to use your voice and help make a change in the world. Other ways you can help make change are by signing petitions, supporting protestors, donating money, and most importantly: creating an action plan.
