As thousands come together to demand justice for African Americans, beautiful lives have been lost. Earlier this month, 19-year-old activist Oluwatoyin Salau was found dead after crying out for help. As we mourn her death and fight to ensure this doesn’t happen again, details surrounding the case have been revealed.

In multiple statements with the police and a phone call to his mother, Aaron Glee Jr. confessed to the killings of both Salau and 72-year-old Victoria Sims. Glee waived his right to remain silent and revealed to the Tallahassee Police Department that he held Salau hostage and raped her several times before killing her. According to police documents, Glee met Salau at a bus stop where she explained her living situation and sexual assault incident that took place earlier that day. Glee then offered her a ride to his house to rest and shower. After an extended conversation on the bus stop bench, Glee arranged for Victoria Sims, 72, to pick them up. Surveillance footage confirmed the interaction and the car coming to pick them up shortly after.

While recounting his actions, Glee continued to say that after Salau finished her shower, he tried to have sex with her. In the attempt to fight him off, Salau bit him but was eventually overpowered by Glee. Following the incident, he kept her hostage for three to five days in his home. During the time, he admitted to sexually assaulting her numerous times and untying her every so often to use the bathroom.

Aaron Glee Jr. has a criminal past and knew that if he were to let the victims go, there was a strong possibility of him ending back up in jail. “Glee indicated that he determined that his only course of action was to end her life,” the report said.

After he determined the two of them were dead, Glee attempted to go to Orlando to stay with his family. The Tallahassee Police Department was able to pin his location and detain him at a Greyhound bus station and then take him into custody. When he complained about breathing issues, he was taken to the hospital where he later confessed. He has been brought back to Tallahassee “where he’s facing two counts each of murder and kidnapping and one count of sexual assault,” according to Tallahassee.com.

The series of events is not nothing short of traumatic and unfortunate. As information is released regarding the case, many are demanding justice for the two victims. In order to move forward, we must remember to show up for the people who have shown up for us.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
