After departing Suits’ in September 2016, Torres’ character, Jessica Pearson, reappeared a few years later in the spin-off, Pearson, a drama centered around dirty politics in Chicago. This was also Torres’ first project as an executive producer.

In a recent interview, Black Hollywood Live’s Curvy Critic, Carla Renata, discussed Gina Torres’ biggest adjustment as an actor and executive producer.

“As an actor, you’re only in a corner of the world and you really try to serve your piece. As a producer, you have more of a bird’s eye view of everything that’s going on. It was a blessing to be able to find my voice and contribute it in a very different way on multi-levels.”

On the show Pearson, fans saw the fictional character travel back home to Chicago and accept a job working for a possibly corrupt mayor while also trying to reconnect with her family. Not only were fans excited about Torres’ character reemerging, Torres expresses her endearment towards the show.

“This was my baby. This was my brain child. I conceived of it, I dreamt it up in my head.”

As far as the process, Torres details, “I got the writers, the producers, and the network on board. I was able to pitch it in such a way that I really sold it on the fact that I desperately wanted to show a whole woman- in all of her fullness and challenges, the sacrifices, and the joy to be able to walk in her shoes…which were significant shoes to walk in.”

More recently, Torres landed a role in “Selah and the Spades”, which illustrates the underground societies at a prestigious boarding school —through Black and Brown eyes.

Torres says “You have these kids playing these games that have very, very real consequences. At first it’s just sexy and fun- it’s like your first bit of power.”

Without giving too much away about the movie, Torres hints that things eventually take an unexpected turn, and the kids are in for a rude awakening.

Premiere during the 2019 Sundance Film Festival at Egyptian Theatre on January 27, 2019 in Park City, Utah.

Selah and the Spades, written and directed by Tayarisha Poe, will also star Lovie Simone, Jesse Williams, Jharrel Jerome, Celeste O’Connor, and Ana Mulvoy Ten.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic closing movie theaters, Selah and the Spades will premiere on Amazon Prime, April 17, 2020.
