These issues converged recently when Holliblu ambassador Imaris Vera’s video of quitting her job due to lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) went viral. Vera claimed despite bringing her own PPE from home, she was not allowed to use it in certain areas that would leave her unprotected at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois. Though Vera has received support, she was met with a wave of online criticism, so much so Vera felt it was best to deactivate her Instagram page. Lunsford acknowledged that while nurses know what they sign up for, they expect to be protected, as their pledge to “do no harm” extends to them receiving the proper protection so they don’t infect others.

Lunsford discussed Holliblu’s efforts to connect nurses with PPE during this crisis, with actor, Jack Black donating his N95 masks that Holliblu was able to get in the hands of home health care workers just today. Lunsford also noted, though there are a few more challenges, Holliblu continues to to get nurses pizza on Fridays. It is a program that started prior to the pandemic, that has become more critical to the well being of the nurses than anyone would have thought.

Lunsford ended the interview by urging Americans to support nurses best by staying home and highlighting how much the simple act of applause for neighbors on the frontline mean so much to the nursing community.
