In this episode, Black Hollywood Live hosts Nick Perdue and Megan Thomas interview special guest Jaclyn Betham.
Jaclyn Betham, originally from Long Beach, CA, has had a love for performing since before she could remember, starting off in gymnastics as just a young girl. After a huge growth spurt Jaclyn turned to ballet where she quickly excelled and began training with the San Jose Ballet Company. At the age of 15 she was accepted into the Houston Ballet where she performed for three years before moving back to San Jose as part of the San Jose Opera.
At 19 Jaclyn had the opportunity to dance and coach with Ballet Pacifica and she quickly fell in love with teaching. She became an instructor for the San Jose Ballet and started her own non-profit, the Betham Ballet Theatre, which gives underprivileged children the chance to learn the art of ballet.
Jaclyn first started her acting experience with roles in short films, which led her to want more despite her promising ballet career. Determined to fully pursue her love for acting she moved to Los Angeles where she started modeling and shooting commercials while continuing her work as a principal dancer with the Anaheim Ballet.
In 2013 Jaclyn landed her breakout role as Amanda Cryer in Tyler Perry’s hit drama “The Haves and The Have Nots,” which debuted on May 28th as the OWN Network’s highest rated drama to date. The series, which follows the complicated dynamic between the rich and powerful and the hired help who work for them, is going into its second season with viewership records at an all-time high for the network. Jaclyn plays Amanda, daughter of the wealthy Cryer Family, who tries hard to live up to her parents’ expectations despite troubles dealing with her own dark demons.
