One of UK’s Top 100 Influential People Simon Frederick Shares Insight on Netflix Docuseries
Written by: Danny Royce – February 20th 2020, 8:02pm pst
New Netflix docuseries They’ve Gotta Have Us reaches new levels with collaborations.
Frederick recently joined Danny Royce Inside the Black Actors Studio to talk about his docu-series that has everyone turning their heads. They’ve Gotta Have Us is a dynamic chronicle of art, activism and race in Black Cinema featuring in-depth interviews with some of Hollywood’s most iconic voices such as: John Singleton, Harry Belafonte, Barry Jenkins, Don Cheadle, Jussie Smollet and many more!
When asked what motivated Frederick to create this project he said, “We’re (Blacks) exceptional! I grew up watching exceptional performances from, you know, incredible artists.” Frederick’s docu-series premiered on February 6th and has gotten some great reviews. Frederick shared one of the biggest challenges he faced with the project was “Being Black. 99.9% of people who work in television or film will never have an opportunity to work with a Black director. They will tell you we don’t do it that way. You can differ your responsibility to them or you can be like me stubborn and stand by your idea.”
So many amazing voices share their stories in each episode. Frederick was able to work with incredible talent that he adores. “At first I was worried about it because most of the contributors are American. It’s a Black project where you’re literally speaking against the industry so to speak.” When asked who Frederick would like to work with in the future he expressed, “I am working with her: Ava DuVernay.”

His follow up series “They’ve Gotta Have Us”, which charts the revolutionary rise of black artists in film, is another critically acclaimed hit delivered by Frederick – Who has been named in the annual Powerlist in the U.K, as one of the U.K’s 100 most Influential Black People alongside the likes of the Duchess Of Sussex, Meghan Markle and British Vogue Editor Edward Enninful.
