Graduation in 2020 has looked very different for many graduates. Even though graduation is virtual this year, it doesn’t diminish the hard work and dedication each and every student has done in order to obtain their diploma. Former president, Barack Obama, gave a commencement speech for America’s high school graduates. Though it was a speech for high school graduates, everyone can learn from his inspirational words. Here are three life lessons viewers can take away from his commencement speech that will stick with you forever.

Don’t be afraid

This is a scary time for a lot of people because families have lost their jobs, loved ones are becoming sick, and the mental health of others is worrisome. “America’s gone through tough times before, like slavery, Civil war, famine, disease, The Great Depression, and 9/11. Each time, we came out stronger, usually because of a new generation,” Obama said. He said it’s up to the new generation to continue to be resilient and learn from history’s mistakes in order for the world to prevail.

Do what you think is right

It’s time for us to stand up for what we believe in and make a change. He said it’s important for the new generation to live by principles and values that are meaningful and will last a lifetime. “You’ll make mistakes, like we all do, but if you listen to the truth that’s inside yourself, even when it’s hard, even when it’s inconvenient, people will notice, they’ll gravitate toward you and you’ll be a part of the solution, instead of part of the problem,” Obama said.

Build a community

“No one does big things by themselves,” he said. It’s hard to see the light when you’re surrounded by darkness, but Obama doesn’t want the American people to give up hope. He said we need each other in these trying times more than ever. “If we’re going to get through these difficult times, if we’re going to create a world where everybody has the opportunity to find a job, and afford college…if we’re going to save the environment and defeat future pandemics, then we’re going to have to do it together,” Obama said inspirationally.

Whether you are a graduate or not, the former president has delivered a powerful and inspirational message many can learn from. It’s important during this time that people start thinking inclusively and not separately if America wants to recover from the pandemic.

“Stand up for one another’s rights, leave behind the old ways of thinking that divide us: sexism, racial prejudice, status, greed, and set the world on a different path,” Obama said.
