After technical issues brought the original competition between Teddy Riley and Babyface to an end last Saturday people from around the world made it clear that they were ready for the rematch. Setting the record for most people tuning into an instagram live feed. The original record held by Drake and Tory Lanez  had 310k viewers. However tonight,  500k people piled into their live stream on the artist’s Instagram page to watch these R&B TITANS go ahead to head. This MUSIC  battle was unrehearsed, unscripted and RAW.  The perfect ingredients for an R&B audience that loves R&B music. As a result the viewing audience got behind the scenes stories of various celebrities from Michael Jackson to Madonna to Halle Berry. Along with the best R&B music on the planet. The audience also got an impromptu live performance from R&B legend Babyface as he sang his classic hit single “When can I see you again? “

The viewing public also got to spend time with some of their favorite celebrities like  Pharell, Mariah Carey and Gabrielle Union essentially in the same club,  at the same time,  side-by-side sharing the same experience.  The beauty in this is while we all are in the middle of a global pandemic feeling isolated at times those with only $5 to their name we’re getting the same experience as the millionaires. It felt like it was a modern day virtual Woodstock and how ironic it took place on 4/20…

And as if that wasn’t enough, one of the bigger stories of the night was once again technical issues but not in the way most people would think. The technical issue was that the streams would no longer connect. This occurred out of the blue with no warning.   Over 500,000 people were suddenly  forced to choose Teddy Riley’s page or Babyface’s page; and no, that wasn’t part of the voting process. For some reason they both kept receiving the same message “unable to connect”.

And of course as many were jokingly shading Teddy Riley for technical issues once again, as he went viral because of technical issues on Saturday, Teddy Riley discovered exactly what happened…”We broke the Internet”. It’s highly likely that millions of people were tuned into this live stream which means it’s an advertiser’s treasure trove. But the people being left out of this equation for profiting off of it at this time was Instagram who of course is owned by Facebook.  Regardless of the reason one thing is certain history was made Monday night because over 1 million people united, and 1 million people with something in common came together to celebrate and appreciate black culture.  With music, love and laughter leading the charge making HISTORY in another way.  And that by itself is the biggest story of the night. And it speaks volumes. #neverforget
