BLACK SUPERHERO ALMANAC: MISTY

Black Hollywood Live’s Black Superhero Almanac covers all the great superheroes since the beginning of superhero comics.  Our goal is for fans to remember and get to know these fantastic and powerful warrior creations.  With any luck Hollywood will get to know them, too, so we can see more on screen.  Until then we have the Black Superhero Almanac.

Mercedes Kelly Knight, also known as “Misty” Knight was first mentioned, by name, in Marvel Premiere #20 (January 1975), and actually appeared in the following issue. Born and raised in New York City, Misty never left her roots, graduating from the Police Academy with honors, and joining the N.Y.P.D. A rising star, Misty rose through the ranks, quickly becoming a lieutenant.

During her time with the Department, Misty got seriously injured, which resulted in her having to amputate her right arm. Rather than take a desk job, she resigned from the police force.

Taking notice of her heroism, Tony Stark, also known as ‘Iron Man,’ provided her with a bionic arm, giving her superhuman strength.

Aside from the newly bionic arm, Misty Knight is known to be well-versed in martial arts and hand-to-hand combat. She was even trained by some of the best martial artists in the world, such as Iron Fist and Shang-Chi.

Later down the line, she found a love interest in Iron First as well, but that’s  neither here nor there.

Following her time at the department, Misty found herself helping a friend, Colleen Wing, while in the middle of an attempted rape case.  Once that was resolved, the two decided to set up their own private detective agency entitled: “Knightwing Restorations Ltd.”

In 2006,, in the “Civil War” storyline, Misty and Coleen were contacted by Iron Man, Reed Richards, and Spider-Man to reform the Heroes for Hire in order to track down superhumans, who are refusing to comply with the Superhuman Registration Act

Misty would go on to become a liaison for a new, loose-knit Heroes for Hire, employing the likes of Moon Knight, Falcon, Black Widow, and Ghost Rider, in various missions.

Now, one of my favorite storylines is when Misty worked as an undercover agent in a New Hydra headquarters. While undercover, she saw Sam Wilson, the All-New Captain America, wounded and in a fight with Crossbones. Misty eventually stepped in to help him, taking up the shield and all, and revealing her undercover work to Sam. She even went as far as telling him that Hydra has a mole in every superhuman force, like the Avengers, the X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D., and that he could trust no one.

Misty Knight is now known as an integral part of the Marvel Universe, so it was only fitting that the One-Armed Detective was included in 2016’s ‘Luke Cage’ series on Netflix, portrayed by the wonderful Simone Missick.

BUT, with that show ending, and the MCU expanding, do you think we will get another Misty Knight? Say, in ‘Falcon and The Winter Soldier’?
